So my doctor decided to induce me before my blood pressure shot through the roof and before Kotlen got so big we had complications. At 38 weeks 5 days, I went into the hospital: June 7th at 7:30. They started me on the pit and on an IV. I had a sugar drip to help off set my sugars. And they had insulin ready for me just in case. I never needed it!! Yeah. And then the day drug on. At 3 pm--which was my guess for when Kotlen would be born--I was at a 2. My doctor broke my water and encouraged me to a 3.
As the nurses changed, I decided to go ahead and have an epideral. My contractions were different than they had always been. They didn't score as high on the nurses screen, but they hurt more than any of my other contractions had before. I debated back and forth whether it was the right thing to do, until I had it in and working. I am so glad I did it!! The pain became simple pressure and then even the pressure was gone. Todd caught a nap and so did I.
At about midnight the baby's heart rate dropped. The nurse came in and rolled me over and his heart rate came back up. My contractions instead of being consistant, I would have 3 or 4 right in a row and then a lul. But when I had more than 3 in a row, Kolten's heart rate would drop. He did not like that!! It happened about every 30 minutes. The nurses would roll me. They found if they would rub the top of his head, he liked that and his heart rate would come back up--not that it was comfortable for me, but I'm just the mom, n'est pas? So I rubbed my belly, and I found that although he didn't like it as much, it was still effective in helping his heart rate. But I was on meds, and fell asleep only to wake up and find his heart rate dropping. I would start rubbing and his heart rate would come back up. I felt so guilty for falling asleep.
Meanwhile, I was a 6 at midnight. We had tried to get a sub, but one right after another flaked on us. So Todd knew he had to get the route done. But it wasn't looking good for timing. So Todd went early. And he ran as fast as he could--he didn't care about complaints. And he only got 2. I got nervous when at 3:20 the doctor was worried about baby. Its not good for his heart to keep dropping. And they started to talk about a c-section--and it didn't sound like they would wait for Todd. They were going to check me again at 4:30 and if I hadn't progressed, they were going to do a c-section. At about 4, I went from feeling nothing to being in pain. I called Todd and asked where he was--and he was on his way. I told him to hurry. And I tried and failed at relaxing. So I called my nurses and asked her to come check me. Either I was having this baby--or something was wrong. I called Todd again. All I could say was "Hurry!!" At that point he had gotten there was fighting with a slow security guard. After my phone call, the other guard said "Let the man through!!" Todd ran to my room. He scared a poor janitor in the process too.
When he got to my room, I was still waiting for the nurse, and I had just pushed. I told him, and he promptly went back out and got my nurse for me. She came in, and said she'd check, "On the next contraction push and we'll see if this baby moves down any." Well I did push on the next contraction, and half way through the nurses promptly decided she didn't want me pushing anymore. He moved about 3/4ths of an inch. She called 4 times for the doctor and back up nurses. She told them to get a nurse in here now!! She would not leave me. She kept telling me to not push through those contractions. She'd tell me to breath and that I really did want the doctor here for this. I thought I did a terrible job at not pushing. It's not easy to not push when your body is telling you to--but she said I did a good job. Todd washed his hands and said "Put me to work, what can I do?" So between contractions she was telling Todd how to set up the room for a delivery. The doctor and nurses finally came and it was only 3 pushes later--the doctor had to wiggle Kolten's head some to get it out--but I didn't tear!! Thanks Anna for the oils that helped with that!!
Kolten Darrell Nef was born 8lbs 1 oz at 4:18 am on Friday--June 8th, my mother's birthday. She was tickled pink!! After 22 hours of induced labor, and only 10 minutes after Todd got back, he was born: healthy!! He looked great. Todd got to cut his umbilical cord.
Kolten is spelled with a K just like his 3 sisters and his grandma K. And we just liked the name Kolten: we disagreed how to spell it, but C'est la vie. Darrell is after his great grandpa Nef. This is probably the man Todd was closest too. We miss him terribly. He passed away just 2 weeks before Kylee was born. And she was suppose to be Kaydyn Darrell, but she being who she is didn't agree, and decided to be a girl instead! When Todd was having a particularly rough time, he would take off and drive the two hours up to his grandpa nef's ranch. He would sleep on their couch and just enjoy being with them in the morning. They always were glad to see him. They didn't talk about what was bothering him but it always helped!
The thing I remember most about our visits was as we left. He'd always give me a great big hug. And then he'd tell me how wonderful my husband is. And you could tell how sincere he was. Todd later said "He says that about everyone." And it's probably true. But I'm sure that doesn't change how much he meant it! He made you feel like a million dollars. We've been blessed to encounter a lot of great men, but Darrell J Nef is the man that we most admire. We miss him terribly.
Kolten came out screaming it seemed--and he didn't stop crying for almost 10 minutes!! Healthy set of lungs he has.
Did I mention we had to wiggle--really wiggle--to get his big head out? But it looks great on him!!
The proud papa!!
My girls look very much like the Nefs. This little boy is my first child who looks like a Tingey.
Look at all that hair!! When I told my grandpa, he laughed. Yes I know, this isn't much compared to Cyntha's kids. And my Grandpa Tingey says I should have seen my mom. But for a Nef kid--this is a lot of hair!!
